June Update

Well well well….look who decided to get off her ass and write a blog post. 聽馃檪
Sorry friends. 聽But the summer kicked into gear and I went into total blog hibernation mode. 聽I had so much going on in the first few weeks of the summer and little desire to pop out any more blog posts after my last one. 聽
But it’s the last week of June and I’m about to embark on my big trip for the summer so I wanted to kick things into gear again. 聽聽
So lets get this party started with a major update. 聽Here’s what’s been happening the last few weeks:
[one] 聽I attended a fantastic blogging workshop, called Perform on Pinterest. 聽It was informative y’all. 聽I have a full review post scheduled so I’m not gonna give a ton of details right now. 聽But it involved getting a ton of new information on Pinterest, getting some hands on work in with the experts (Meg from Meg O. on the Go and Channing and Michelle from Mom’s Without Answers), bonding with my fellow Houston bloggers and some pretty sweet swag. 聽Including a private shopping party and very generous gift card courtesy of Kendra Scott.

[two] A much needed week with my parents in the Southwest. 聽We visited family and friends in Albuquerque, NM and spent a relaxing few days at our family cabin in Ruidoso, NM. 聽Even though it was much hotter than we expected it nice to disconnect a little and just enjoy the mountains and each other. 聽

[three] Picked up my brand new couch that I am totally in love with. 聽After deciding to abandon my vintage couch refurbishment project. 聽(Which you can read about here). 聽I began to scour Craigslist and furniture stores for a couch. 聽And thankfully I found the PERFECT one on the app OfferUp. 聽I picked it up on Sunday it is gorgeous. 聽I paid just the right amount for it and it is in perfect condition. I’m seriously in love with it. 聽
[four] Got some excellent reading time in. 聽This is basically what I did the entire time we were at our cabin in the mountains!聽I was able to finish three of the books on my to-read list and really enjoyed each them. 聽Review coming soon!
[five] I got to spend some much needed time with my bestie Ashley and my niece Lacey. 聽I cannot get over how big she has gotten. 聽Thank goodness for FaceTime y’all because she came right to me when they came to pick me up for our putting and when asked, “Where’s Aunt Kac?” She can point right at me! 聽It’s the best feeling ever!聽
[six] Got confirmation that on Washington DC trip, which kicks off tomorrow, we will be going into the WHITE HOUSE!!!! I am so excited for this trip y’all. 聽It’s going to be the first family vacation we’ve taken in years and getting to go inside the White House with my family is just the icing on the cake. 聽I cannot wait to take off bright and early tomorrow morning! 聽Be sure to follow me on Snapchat (Kalady88) and Instagram (just click the icon under my picture) to follow along on the trip!聽
*********
Well there ya have it. 聽That’s pretty much what’s been happening with me in the last two weeks. 聽I promise to be a much better blogger once I get back from my DC trip. 聽Plus I’ll have a ton of fun things to blog about!
Remember to follow along on my social media outlets to catch all the fun times we’re having in our nation’s capitol! 馃檪

Your Next Favorite Book: May Reads

May was a fantastic reading month. 聽I got through four different books which puts me at 19 books read for 2016 thus far. 聽And I really enjoyed three of the four books I read. 聽And once again, I read four different books from 3 different genres so it made for a very interesting reading month.聽
Books you should read.

Goodreads Synopsis:When Eadlyn became the first princess of Ill茅a to hold her own Selection, she didn鈥檛 think she would fall in love with any of her thirty-five suitors. She spent the first few weeks of the competition counting down the days until she could send them all home. But as events at the palace force Eadlyn even further into the spotlight, she realizes that she might not be content remaining alone.

Eadlyn still isn鈥檛 sure she鈥檒l find the fairytale ending her parents did twenty years ago. But sometimes the heart has a way of surprising you鈥nd soon Eadlyn must make a choice that feels more impossible鈥攁nd more important鈥攖han she ever imagined.

My thoughts: Ok I feel like I have preface this by saying, I LOVED The Selection Series. 聽Absolutely loved it. 聽And sadly I hated The Heir and The Crown. 聽The Heir was bearable, but it was I didn’t even write a review on it. 聽(If I did I have no idea when because I can’t find it.) 聽But The Crown was awful. 聽I didn’t give two shits about Eadlyn. 聽I was bored with all of her romances. 聽It was totally predictable who she ended up with and even that relationship was stupid to me. 聽The only parts I enjoyed were the ones that mentioned America and Maxon. 聽In fact I think that rather than write two books about their daughter, there should have been books written about America and Maxon after the Selection. 聽Those would have been way more entertaining and likable. 聽In fact I just went back and changed my rating….originally I gave it three stars but it as I’m writing this I realized it barely deserves one. 聽

Goodreads Synopsis:A smart, obsessive debut novel about a young woman studying abroad who becomes caught up in a seductive French world鈥攁nd a complex web of love and lust.

When thirty-year-old Brooke Thompson unexpectedly runs into a man from her past, she鈥檚 plunged headlong into memories she鈥檚 long tried to forget about the year she spent in France following a disastrous affair with a professor.

As a newly arrived exchange student in the picturesque city of Nantes, young Brooke develops a deep and complicated friendship with Sophie, a fellow American and stunning blonde, whose golden girl fa莽ade hides a precarious emotional fragility. Sophie and Brooke soon become inseparable and find themselves intoxicated by their new surroundings鈥攁nd each other.

But their lives are forever changed when they meet a sly, stylish French student, Veronique, and her impossibly sexy older cousin, Alex. The cousins draw Sophie and Brooke into an irresistible world of art, money, decadence, and ultimately, a disastrous love triangle that consumes them both. And of the two of them, only one will make it home.

My thoughts: I picked this book up at Target a few weeks ago while I was with Ashley from The Wandering Weekenders. 聽She mentioned that it was also on her to-read list so I decided to give it a try. 聽I was really intrigued by the synopsis. 聽I think I’ve mentioned this but one of my biggest regrets from college is never having studied abroad. 聽So when I saw this was about two friends doing just that, I knew it was something I wanted to read. 聽
I liked the book overall. 聽It was fairly predictable but I was in the mood for a book like that. 聽I liked reading all about France and it was fun recognizing different places in Paris the characters went in the book. 聽There were times when I felt like I needed a French dictionary because some of the lines were said in French and then never translated into English but it was bearable. 聽But overall I really enjoyed reading it. 聽It didn’t blow me away but I would definitely pick up another book written by this author! And it’s worth a read if you’re looking for something a little dark and a lot French.

Goodreads Synopsis:Six-year-old Gretl Schmidt is on a train bound for Auschwitz.聽Jak贸b Kowalski is planting a bomb on the tracks.

As World War II draws to a close, Jak贸b fights with the Polish resistance against the crushing forces of Germany and Russia. They intend to destroy a German troop transport, but Gretl鈥檚 unscheduled train reaches the bomb first.

Gretl is the only survivor. Though spared from the concentration camp, the orphaned German Jew finds herself lost in a country hostile to her people. When Jak贸b discovers her, guilt and fatherly compassion prompt him to take her in. For three years, the young man and little girl form a bond over the secrets they must hide from his Catholic family.

But she can鈥檛 stay with him forever. Jak贸b sends Gretl to South Africa, where German war orphans are promised bright futures with adoptive Protestant families鈥攕o long as Gretl鈥檚 Jewish roots, Catholic education, and connections to communist Poland are never discovered.

Separated by continents, politics, religion, language, and years, Jak贸b and Gretl will likely never see each other again. But the events they have both survived and their belief that the human spirit can triumph over the ravages of war have formed a bond of love that no circumstances can overcome.

My thoughts: 聽This was another book I picked up from Target. 聽And another that I really enjoyed. 聽Then again that’s no surprise because 1. it’s a historical fiction novel and 2. It’s based during WWII. 聽And if you know me you know that is the perfect recipe for a book I will like. 聽What I especially liked about this book was that it was about a part of WWII that I didn’t know anything about. 聽I had no idea that orphaned German children were taken to South Africa and adopted by South African parents. 聽And it gave me a little more background into the war in Poland. 聽 I really enjoyed following Gretl’s story, she was forced to adapted to some very intense situations which she did with bravery and confidence that I know she must not have felt. 聽
I think this is one of my favorite historical fiction books of 2016. 聽
Goodreads Synopsis:Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.

What Lou doesn’t know is she’s about to lose her job or that knowing what’s coming is what keeps her sane.

Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he’s going to put a stop to that.

What Will doesn’t know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time.

My thoughts: THIS BOOK. 聽Y’all I can’t even put into coherent words my thoughts and feelings for this book. 聽I loved it. 聽Everything about it. 聽It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me think, and it made me feel all the feels. 聽I haven’t read a book that did all of those things in forever. 聽I really want to read some of Jojo Moyes’ other books because I really enjoyed her writing style and I’m sure I would enjoy them.
This was my choice for the book club I’m part of at school and we haven’t met yet to talk about it. 聽We’ve planned to meet to talk about it on June 23, we’re going to dinner first to talk about the book and then we’re going to see the movie. 聽Which I have also heard amazing things about. 聽BAH I’m so excited. 聽
Whatever book you’re reading now you need to hurry and finish it and read this one. 聽You won’t regret it! 馃檪
*******
Alrighty, so June is looking to be a pretty good reading month as well. 聽I’m gonna have tons of reading time next week, since I’ll be heading home to see my parents. 聽We’re going to be going up to our family cabin which is the perfect environment for reading. 聽I’m pretty excited about it! 馃檪
As always, hopefully you find at least one book you want to add to your to-read list. 馃檪
Happy Thursday friends and happy reading! 馃檪

Three Reasons

Remember when I decided to be really cool and reupholster a vintage couch that I found in my neighbors yard. 聽That was back in April (Easter weekend to be exact) and up until Memorial Day weekend I had literally done nothing in regards to said couch. 聽It had just been sitting in our front living room being slept on and pooped on by the animals in our house.

During Memorial Day weekend I decided to finally get a jump on the project. 聽I spent one whole day totally dedicated to the couch. 聽I ripped, pulled, wiggled, and yanked at every piece of fabric, trim, batting, and at the hundred nails scattered around the couch.

Once it was stripped I was pretty excited about the next part. 聽So excited in fact that I’ve officially decided to abandon the whole project.

I’ve realized that if I write out exactly what happened to make me come to this decision this post would be the longest post ever, so I’m gonna break it down to just 3 reasons I’ve decided to abandon the project.

[one] This couch needs A LOT of work. 聽Ok so the amount of work this couch needs is unreal. 聽The legs need to be replaced, all the batting under the fabric needs to be replaced, all three cuchions on the couch need to be replaced, the fabric (obviously) need to be replaced, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it needed to be fumigated and like de-bugged or something. 聽When I first looked at the couch I thought….oh this will be totally do-able. 聽But once i really started, there was a lot more work than meets the eye.

[two]聽This project was supposed to SAVE me money not cost me MORE money.聽聽When I sat down and really started to price out how much it was going to cost to re-cover this sofa, I realized I would be spending just as much re-doing it as I would on a brand new couch. 聽I even looked into getting it professionally refurbished and that too would have been just as much as a new couch.

[three] While I’m confident I would do an ok job in the actual reupholstering of couch, I don’t want to spend $700 and the results just be “ok”. 聽While I know I can get a professional to do to it and it would look great. 聽I know that I can find something I’m just as happy with that is brand new for the same amount of money.聽聽

***********

Overall, whole point of this project was too save myself some money. 聽And once I realized I would not be saving any money, I became super disillusioned with the whole thing. 聽Sad but true.

So I am back to square one on the couch front. 聽I have already found one that I really like on that new app called Offerup. 聽But I haven’t heard back from the seller yet. 聽I’m hoping I do, because I really really like this couch. 聽And I think it would go well with everything else in the apartment. 聽But just in case I don’t hear back, I’ve already started looking for similar couches in hopes that I find one I love.

I’m sad to be letting go of the project because I was really excited about the prospect, but I just don;t think it’s worth all the time and money I’ll be spending.

I think I’ll stick with easy DIY jobs like stools and picture frames.

Currently {June}

Reading…. A book I picked up from Target a few weeks ago. 聽It’s called Losing the Light by Andrea Dunlap. 聽So far so good. 聽It’s an easy read which is what I’m looking for right now. 聽The next book will be my next book club books. 聽It’s called An Ember in the Ashes.

I will have a “Your Next Favorite Book” post next week, and I’ll sharing all the books I read in May. 聽Including one of my new personal all time favorites…Me Before You. 聽If you haven’t read this….GET ON IT NOW! It is so good.

Feeling…. a tad overwhelmed. 聽It’s this couch project y’all. 聽It’s not that I didn’t think it wouldn’t be hard. 聽I KNEW it would be, but I dunno I thought it would be something else too. 聽But as I really dig into the project I keep second guessing myself. 聽I realized that the fabric I originally chose is going to be WAY to expensive. This project was supposed to save me some money not cost me more money. 聽Then I keep thinking, what if I buy all this fabric and then hate it. 聽What if I don’t pull the fabric tight enough and the couch looks like shit. What if I get it all done and it is the most uncomfortable couch in the history of couches (I always fall asleep on the couch, so it’s a must that this couch be nap-able) What if….What if….What if….BAH. 聽So many what ifs, it’s giving me a little bit of anxiety and I am not an anxious person.

Drinking…. nothing at the moment. 聽But I am thirsty and a Dr. Pepper sounds amazing. 聽But I don’t keep it in the house anymore so water it is.

Watching….聽Real Housewives of New York. 聽These girls are so bitchy! 聽And I love it. 聽Sonya needs to get it together…I’m sorry but “Tipsy Girl?” 聽Way to close to Skinny Girl if you ask me. 聽Especially after Bethany invited her into a Skinny Girl meeting last season and she sat there and took notes!! 聽Then all of a sudden she comes out with a drink called Tipsy Girl. 聽Yeah I would be pissed too. 聽Not cool Sonya, not cool.

Wanting….聽New bedding. 聽Which is the last thing I need right now, since I have an entire apartment I need to buy things for but still. 聽It’s on the list, albeit at the very bottom of the list. 聽Doesn’t stop me from walking around Target and picking out the one I want. 聽Here the I think I like best right now.

Wishing…. I had about $1,000 extra dollars in the bank. 聽(Don’t we all).

Thinking about…. That today is THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!!! Well technically I have to go to work tomorrow, but there will be zero students and it’s just a wrap up day.

Looking forward too…. Going home in two weeks. 聽We’re gonna spend most of my week home at our family cabin in Ruidoso, NM and I cannot wait to get some mountain air. 聽We’ll also be going to see my cousin and her new baby!

Loving…. These Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Sticks. 聽I joined Influenster a few weeks ago and have loved reviewing some of my favorite products. 聽I got my very first Vox Box in the mail the other day and inside were 2 of the new Vivid Matte Liquid Lipsticks. 聽They are so fun! 聽I received two different colors, a nude and a red. 聽My favorite was the nude, called Nude Flush. 聽It has a slight pink tinge to it and goes great with my skin tone. 聽I’ve worn it to work everyday since I got it.

This is by no means an actual matte, it has a matte finish but is very creamy. 聽It doesn’t have a dry finish it has a very creamy finish. 聽It’s not that dries either, you will have to reapply it throughout the day, which is fine with me.

Well there ya have a little bit of what’s new with me. 聽I seriously cannot believe it’s the last day of school. 聽It feels like yesterday I was so excited for the start of the school year and now I’m about to say goodbye. 聽WOO HOO!

Till tomorrow friends! 馃檪

It’s the week of the link ups….linking up with Kristen for What’s New聽With You!

Current MakeUp Favorites

I’ve recently become obsessed with makeup.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved it. 聽In fact if I could find a way to post the home video of me giving my cousin Jordan a make up tutorial I totally would. 聽But I’ve never been one to really know how to do my own makeup. 聽I pretty much have done my makeup the exact same for the last 10 years. 聽And to be honest I’m fine with that routine. 聽I know what looks good and I stick with it.

But lately I’ve been wanted to up my make up game. 聽I attempted to learn to contour and that was a slight, ok major bust. 聽I’ve watch about a million make up tutorials and am still not sure how to do it. 聽I think I need someone to sit me down and walk me through it. 聽But that’s neither her nor there at this point. 聽While I haven’t mastered contouring I have added a few more steps to my makeup routine that I feel make me look a tad more polished.

Today I thought I would share some of my current make up favorites.

I am by no means a high end make up buyer. 聽Save for a few things. 聽I have this thing where I go to Sephora/Ulta with the intention of buying something a littler pricer that I want and then end up leaving the store with the drugstore equivalent. 聽womp womp. 聽But the following are a happy mix of high and low end products.

1. NYX Color Correcting Concealer – I have TERRIBLE dark circles under my eyes. 聽It’s annoying and I know I need to drink more water or something. 聽But until I start doing those things this little palette is perfect and it’s only about $11 at Target. 聽I’m really loving the extra coverage it gives to my blemishes and dark circles.

2. Elf Lifting Undereye Concealer – For me this is the best under eye concealer I’ve tried. 聽I put it over the top of the color corrector and it does WONDERS! 聽I wasn’t able to find it in any store so I finally ordered it online. 聽Best part….its a whopping $3!

3. bareMinerals Ready Luminator- I found this little beauty at Marshalls a few weeks ago and have totally fallen in love with it. 聽I can use it as a bronzer even though it’s technically a laminator (ok so I don’t actually know what the difference between those things are) but hey it works for me! 馃檪 聽And since I found it in the beauty section at Marshall’s it was only $10, as opposed to $20.

4. Anastasia Brow Wiz- A friend of mine actually gave me this because she didn’t care for it. 聽And hello eyebrows! I LOVE IT. 聽I’ve never really paid much attention to my brows, mostly because they are pretty much non-existent. 聽But since the lovely little product has been introduced into my makeup routine it’s all about the brows. 聽I can’t believe how much of a difference it makes when you fill in your brows. 聽It’s a little scary. 聽This is one of my pricier items, but I love it so much I don’t mind spending the money on it. 聽In fact, I need a new one ASAP.

5. Master Contour Palette – I bought this a few聽weeks ago when I was obsessed with learning聽to contour. 聽That obsession has settled down somewhat. 聽I bought this with the intention to practice and then upgrade to a high end palette but to be honest, I’m 100% happy with this little baby. 聽I LOVE the blush and the highlighter and when I do want a little more definition to my face this does the job pretty well!聽

6. bareMinerals BareSkin Foundation聽– I’ve been using the BareSkin Foundation for about 2 years and I still love it. 聽It covers great and I can get anywhere from light to full coverage depending on how I’m feeling. 聽And it lasts FOREVER. 聽I’ve recently started buying the travel size because it lasts just as long as the full size and is cheaper! Win win!聽

7. Maybelline Color Whisper Lipstick- Berry Ready, Pin Up Peach, and Who Wore it Redder – This is by far my all time favorite lip stick. 聽I have it in four different shades and wear it all the time. 聽Sadly I can’t find it in stores anymore. 聽I especially聽love the Berry Ready color. 聽I really want to find the聽equivalent shade in the Color Pop line!聽
******
Alrighty well there ya have it. 聽Just a few of my favorite makeup items. 聽I use each and every one of these products pretty much daily and I am really loving my makeup lately. 聽I’ve been using the same mascara and eyeshadow for like 4 years so I didn’t include them. 聽
Have a great Wednesday friends! 馃檪
